Smart Building Academy's Building Automation Technician Certificate Program prepares students to hit the ground running on day one.
Our seasoned cadre of instructors will facilitate live training sessions for students along with self-paced lessons, and on-the-job exercises.
In just 11 weeks, students cultivate the foundation needed to skip the typical learning curve met by new technicians.
Explore the program roadmap below to learn exactly what students learn as they move through SBA's Workforce Development Program.
SBA's Building Automation Technician Certificate Program is a highly accelerated workforce development program.
We support employers looking to rapidly upskill new and existing employees.
Furthermore, we have the capability to facilitate connections between employers and a broad spectrum of talent during their quest for new hires.
Given the substantial involvement of live instruction, each cohort is capped at a maximum of 25 students.
SBA's students take the exact same quantitative skill assessment that companies use to evaluate the performance of their employees.
The results of this assessment determine the student's strengths and weaknesses. It pinpoints areas for students and their instructors to focus on during the program.
At the end of the program, students take the exact same assessment to validate improvement.
Mentors are a key part of our program. We have developed a robust mentor onboarding and support plan. We also provide a detailed mentor facilitation guide that makes mentoring new students a breeze.
Because we believe that hands-on training is the best training, all Workforce Development Program students require a lab kit. We will provide employers with a list of items including controllers, software, power supplies, actuators, relays, sensors, and wiring supplies.
We also have lab kits available for purchase.
SBA's student success team will work with employers to ensure students have the materials and necessary safety training that is required to begin the program.

In Week 11, students will be participating in a unique practicum that simulates the real-world tasks a BAS professional would face. The key topics are:
This practicum is a hands-on exam that is unique to the SBA curriculum. It simulates being handed a set of job drawings and being told to "go figure it out".
Students will get a random set of job drawings and will be expected to create one-lines, Bill of materials, and controller wiring diagrams. They will need to explain their choices and how those choices impact the mechanical systems they are controlling.
If students pass this part of the practicum, they will move on to the hands-on portion where our instructor staff will observe them wiring up a control system according to their design and then making this system work.
This unique, hands-on testing methodology sets this course apart from others in the market. Each practicum is customized with randomly generated documents, ensuring a unique and challenging experience for every student.
The Smart Buildings Academy validation process is unique in that we utilize an extensive written exam and physical practicum.
As part of the practicum, the student will physically install, commission, and program a set of controllers according to provided submittal documentation.
In order to exit the program, the student must perform the following to validate mastery of the skills taught in the program.
Proctored Final Exam
Students perform a comprehensive, proctored final exam that tests their knowledge of the skills and processes learned during SBA's Workforce Development Progam
Hands-On Practicum
The student is remotely observed by an instructor as they assemble their lab kit into a functioning system based on an assigned design submittal set. The instructor then evaluates the installed and deployed system.

SBA has been instrumental in allowing me to break into the BAS industry. Its very possible I would still be doing HVAC service had I not discovered SBA.
I am brand new to the field of building automation and I have learned so much information just in this small window of time. Phil can take you from the ground floor and make you into a great professional.
Very helpful in getting more acclimated in the BAS/Control field. I've been a medium voltage electrician for 17 years and recently decided to transition to controls. It's very nice to have a resource like this to move me along more quickly.
